There’s still a little bit of a wait till two of the most popular holidays of the season. Thanksgiving is in 12 days and Christmas is in 42 (just in case you were wondering). But while you’re waiting for the holidays to arrive, there is one thing that’s unfortunately already here, flu season.

Yep. It’s that time of year again where the leaves are falling, the wind is blowing, and people are sneezing. According to the CDC, there are only seven states remaining that have not yet had a flu outbreak this year, so it’s spreading fast.

But with the holidays coming up, we’re sure getting sick is the last thing on anyone’s mind. Getting sick and celebrating just don’t fall into the same category! While everyone’s laughing, you’re coughing and that’s not fun at all.

So in the spirit of offering advise and enjoying the holidays, we’re here to give you some tips to stay well. Over the years, our company has built up some healthy practices so that we can avoid the flu and relish in the fun! But we don’t want to just keep them to ourselves, we want to share them with you so you can celebrate the holidays in good health too! After all, the holiday season is about giving.

Step 1: Knowing If You’re At Risk

Before doing anything at all, the first thing we always do is we assess our risk. Now don’t take this for granted. It seems like a small step, but out of everything you do, this is by far the most important part to staying healthy. When you analyze your risk, you can determine what things you should cut out or include in your environment to maintain good health.

For example, children under 5 are some of the top recipients at risk for catching the flu. Knowing this, a parent knows to remove or add things that will inhibit their child from catching the flu, such as adding a designated sick room in the house or adding more frequent hand washing sessions to limit the spread of germs.

When you analyze your risk, you just get a better idea of where you stand and how effective your immune system is in preventing you from catching the flu. So always do that first.

And just in case you’re not sure how high or low your risk level is for catching the flu, the prime demographics for people that are most susceptible to catching the flu are:

Infants and small children under the age of 5

Women who are currently pregnant

Senior citizens

People with an existing health condition

People who are traveling and/or currently living abroad

Step 2: Establishing the Plan

After we assess our risk and  know how susceptible we are to catching the flu, we use that to guide us in making a plan. With our plan, we set guidelines and establish patterns so we can stay healthy and germ-free.

Now everyone is different and based on their risk level, everyone has a different plan to stay healthy. One person may simply plan to just wash their hands more, while another may plan to get the flu shot, eat more vegetables, and get at least 8 hours of sleep every night.

But no matter what you plan to do, just make sure that it is something that is within your abilities to complete. Because if you plan to do something that you can’t follow through on, you won’t be able to reap the benefits.

Step 3: Take Action

Then of course, after we have a plan we put it to action.

If you planned to get a flu shot or drink more fluids, do that.

But put what you planned to use because action is really how you beat the flu (or any illness for that matter). And the more action you take, the more you’ll be able to resist getting sick.

Now of course, we wouldn’t just leave you without a few of our favorite guidelines that we plan to use during the flu season. So if you’re stuck on finding ways to limit your access to germs, here are a few ways you can do that.

-Get your flu shot

-Eat as many fruits and vegetables as you can daily

-When you can, use Clorox wipes to wipe down furniture and any office stationary supplies

-Use hand sanitizer when you go places to break the strand of germs
